How to Choose the Right Focus Technique

Guides ยท 6 min read

There is no single best focus technique โ€” the right one depends on the task in front of you and the specific problem you're trying to solve. The first question to ask: is your problem starting, or sustaining?

If your problem is starting

If you struggle to begin and procrastinate, you want low activation energy. Use the classic 25/5 Pomodoro. The short block makes starting feel trivial, and momentum builds from there.

If your problem is sustaining

If you start fine but lose depth, you need longer, protected blocks. For analytical work like coding and writing, use 52/17. For your hardest creative or cognitive work, use the 90-minute ultradian cycle or a deep work block.

If interrupting flow hurts your output

For design, brainstorming and complex debugging where breaking concentration is costly, use Flowtime โ€” work until focus fades, then take a proportional break.

A sample day

  • Morning, hardest task: one or two 90-minute ultradian blocks.
  • Late morning deep work: 52/17.
  • Post-lunch dip: Pomodoro for admin and email.
  • Creative session: Flowtime.
